In 2014, 21.5 million American adults struggled with a substance abuse disorder according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH). We know that addiction is a disease, and in many cases, it is a genetic disease. While this disease never completely goes away, it can be conquered if the victim has enough support and treatment. Unfortunately, there seems to be a stigma in this country and so many other countries around addiction, but addiction should be viewed as any other disease such as cancer or Parkinson’s disease.
